But the flag is just that, a symbol (desecration only refers to religious symbols, by the way).

Should we ban the destruction of other memorabilia that includes Old Glory? Will the shattering of a patriotic coffee mug become a federal offense? Will using your Desert Storm tank top as a car washrag earn you a fine?

As U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said, 'If the flag needs protection at all, it needs protection from members of Congress who value the symbol more than the freedoms that the flag represents.' "
